CONFIDENCE

By Patrick Cummings

I am a lifeguard on the ocean of potential

I rescue success from the depths of fatigue,

breathe life back into lungs like arrows from muted tongues

I am both singular and in unison

I can be ignored like cloud cover, sold like medicine

I can be spit out like oil spills & cleaned up like apologies

I am a stray tornado at the bulkhead of your basement breath

& I am wondering if you will let me in

You can tell them later how the radio of your mind came clear

like a car exiting a tunnel,

how standing back up felt like drowning in reverse

When the jackhammer in your chest settles,

tell them how you were pulled back into the boat of possibility,

how you took the oars and you found the shore,

how you listened to the voice inside when I whispered,

until I was quiet like satisfaction & still like pride

If one thing has given me confidence in life and in myself, it’s what I did over summer. A complete transformation of myself inside and out to produce who I am today. Who I knew I wanted to be. Who I knew I needed to be. Who I knew would take everything inside of me to become. But who I once thought I could not be. Self-confidence was a thing I lacked…. in every aspect of my life. “I hate the way I look”, “I hate how tired I am”, “I can’t do well in school”, “these classes are too hard”…. the list can go on forever. This is why things needed to change. For anyone out there struggling in any aspect of life, know that confidence is something you CAN have. Self-confidence is nothing more than looking in the mirror, seeing yourself, the product of your experiences and the building blocks of your future, and saying “I got this…. Everything up to this point has prepared me for whatever life has to throw my way, I GOT THIS!”

I’m not going to lie and say that this confidence is something easily found, something that can just be created overnight inside of you. This is something that must be created by a true happiness with yourself and your surroundings. Self-confidence IS inside everyone though. It’s up to you to find it, work yourself to the breaking point, through exhaustion, through everyday life, and once you reach the point where you can be happy with what you have and where you are. THAT’S IT! If you don’t think you have it inside of you, you’re wrong. If you’ve ever said, “one more try… one more shot at this…. I can get this…” about anything, you’ve got it!

Embrace it.

Love it.

Become immersed in it.

Be confident in all you do.

“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.” -E. E. Cummings
